I was born in a mountain village in Xinjiang , and brought up among different ethnic groups. Since my childhood, I began to showinterests in ethnic culture, which I think has a great impact on my later academic research. As an ethnographer, I have conducted extensive fieldwork, which is crucial to the understanding of human culture and behavior. For example, I did four-month field work among Kazakh people in Illy pastoral land in Xinjiang, investigating their tribal history and popular beliefs; I did field work among Mulao people in Luocheng in Guangxi, among Thai people in Yunnan, and Yao people in Laos; during my ph.d. studies, I did eight months field work among Tu Yao people deep in Dagui mountains in Guangxi, studying their school performance. I did field work among Miao people in Great Miao mountains. In 2006, I went to Laos P.D.R and lived together with Lanten people for nearly nine months, which enriched my understanding of cultural diversity.
